What is Peshtemal?

Known in the ancient world as Hierapolis, the city of Denizli on the shore of Eastern Mediterranean produces some of the highest quality towels. Hot springs in this region have been used as a spa since 2nd century BC with Roman Baths built around them. Ottomans, influenced by the Romans, embraced the legacy and built their own form of baths that continues to function until now.

To complement this ancient spa tradition, locals invented the Peshtemal towels. These towels were known for their high absorbency, light weight, and unique patterns and have been in use since 7th century

Peshtemal vs Modern Towels

-Light Weight: Peshtemal towels usually weigh around 200 grams (0.4 pounds) unlike modern

towels that weigh around 700 grams (1.5 pounds).

-High Absorbency: Peshtemals, because of its fabric quality, fully dries between 5 to 10 minutes.

-Compact: The thinner fabric allows peshtemal to be easily folded and carried taking minimal space.

-Versatile Use: Peshtemal can traditionally be used in spa, beach, fitness, yoga and sailing. Due its unique form and style, it can also be used as a throw or tablecloth in interior design, as a scarf or shawl to complement your style and as a travel essential while camping or sailing.

Peshtemals by Monchaq

Not only we love the environment, we also embrace legacy of local craftsmanship. Compared to our counterparts, Monchaq peshtemals are fully handmade with hand-loomed fabric, hand-tied fringes and hand-pressed pattern using hand-carved wood. We only use natural dye and organic fabric that makes our peshtemals non-chemical and hypo-allergenic. Just like how it was made centuries ago! We partner with local artisans and villagers who design and create each peshtemal one by one. Our fabric spectrum includes premium Turkish Cotton, Egyptian Cotton, silk and linen. We are certified by Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 .
